Yankees vs. Dodgers World Series will be record 12th in history

LOS ANGELES — It will be the city of angels vs. the city that never sleeps in the 2024 World Series.

The New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers will meet in the Fall Classic, pitting the two most populous cities in the United States and some of baseball’s most historic franchises against each other for the Commissioner’s Trophy.

The franchises aren’t new to success; the Yankees have a MLB-high 27 World Series titles while Los Angeles has seven championships, sixth most in baseball.

This will be the first time in more than 40 years the two teams will meet in the World Series, but the two franchises are very familiar with each other when it comes to playing for the title. The Yankees and Dodgers have played in the World Series 11 times, the most matchup in league history.

With edition No. 12 of Yankees vs. Dodgers on deck, here is a look at the history of the Yankees and Dodgers in the World Series:

New York won the first two games of the series at home to take a 2-0 lead, but Los Angeles came back to win four straight games − the first three at home and last in New York − to win the World Series.

One of the biggest moments of the series came in Game 5; with the series tied at 2-2 at the Yankees holding a 1-0 lead entering the seventh inning, Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager hit back-to-back home runs to give the Dodgers the lead in an eventual victory. In Game 6, Los Angeles offense broke out for a 9-2 win to capture the title.

The 1981 World Series was the first time co-MVPs were awarded, with Guerrero, Yeager and Ron Cey sharing the honor.
