RGIII bolts from CFP analyst duty after learning wife is in labor

Robert Griffin III has been an excellent addition to ESPN’s college football broadcasts the last two seasons, but Saturday during the College Football Playoff semifinal game between No. 2 Michigan and No. 3 TCU, he had to bail early — because of an excellent excuse.

On one of ESPN’s many broadcasts of the Fiesta Bowl, Griffin got a call at the end of the third quarter telling him that his wife, Grete Griffin, was in labor.

While his broadcast partners were a little confused by his on-air phone call — “What are we doing?” — it was obviously important. He probably wouldn’t have taken the call otherwise.

But RGIII quickly explained: “I gotta go! Wife is going into labor!” And after a round of congratulations, Griffin absolutely bolted off the football field.

Grifffin later tweeted that he had made it on a Southwest flight and was heading home.

A+ for effort from the camera person chasing Griffin as he ran off the field.

Congrats to the Griffins on the newest member of their family!
