North Carolina State broadcaster suspended after ‘illegal aliens’ comment

North Carolina State radio broadcaster Gary Hahn has been suspended indefinitely after referencing “illegal aliens” while announcing the Sun Bowl score during the Wolfpack’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl loss to Maryland on Friday.

During the broadcast, Hahn said, “down among all the illegal aliens in El Paso, it’s UCLA leading Pitt.’

Hahn, an employee of Learfield Communications, the North Carolina State broadcast rights holder, has been disciplined by that company, according to a statement from Wolfpack Sports Properties general manager Kyle Winchester sent to the USA TODAY Network.

“Learfield has suspended Wolfpack Sports Network play-by-play announcer Gary Hahn indefinitely following comments made during today’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl radio broadcast,” the statement read.

Hahn was the North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year in 2011 and 2020 and has been the voice of North Carolina State football and men’s basketball since 1991.
