Pirates win No. 1 pick in MLB’s first-ever draft lottery

The Pittsburgh Pirates secured the No. 1 pick in the 2023 MLB draft in the league’s first-ever draft lottery on Tuesday night.

Here are the remaining teams that will pick in the top 18:

2. Washington Nationals

3. Detroit Tigers

4. Texas Rangers

5. Minnesota Twins

6. Oakland Athletics

7. Cincinnati Reds

8. Kansas City Royals

9. Colorado Rockies

10. Miami Marlins

11. Los Angeles Angels

12. Arizona Diamondbacks

13. Chicago Cubs

14. Boston Red Sox

15. Chicago White Sox

16. San Francisco Giants

17. Baltimore Orioles

18. Milwaukee Brewers

The 18 teams that did not qualify for the 2022 postseason were eligible for the draft lottery, with weighted odds based on winning percentage. The first six selections were awarded by lottery, which made it possible for the team with the worst record to pick as late as No. 7.

The 2023 MLB draft will be held in July in Seattle.

The Pirates have picked No. 1 overall five times previously, most recently in 2021, when they selected Louisville catcher Henry Davis.

High school shortstop Jackson Holliday — the son of seven-time All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday — was the No. 1 choice in the 2022 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles.

What were the teams’ odds of receiving the No. 1 overall pick?
